Spirit spotlight: Martell unleashes the new VSOP Red Barrel

While the VSOP Medallion was blended with eaux-de-vie that were aged in old, new, and red barrels, the VSOP Red Barrel uses eaux-de-vie from only the red barrels. As the eaux-de-vie reaches the optimum state of maturity in the red barrel (four to eight years), the resulting flavour is a perfectly balanced one between fruity and spicy notes. Meanwhile, the former Medallion had bitter and spicy notes because of the combination of eaux-de-vie from the new barrels.

With the rich fruity notes of the new VSOP Red Barrel, the cognac house is hoping that it will draw more interest from the younger crowd. On the nose, the cognac has a fresh, round-bodied aroma with rich notes of yellow stone fruits and subtle woody notes. Take a sip of the spirit and you’ll find it is delightfully fruity with hints of candied fruit.

The release of the Martell VSOP Red Barrel is surely a sign that cognac brands around the world are slowly shedding its intimidating image, opening the spirit up to younger fans. Martell brings it a step forward by taking the plunge to reinvent a cognac variant that has been around since 1960. Seeing as the VSOP Medallion is slowly being phased out, we suggest you buy one bottle (or several) for a keepsake.
