The 2005 Lagavulin Distillers Edition was bottled in 2020 after a decade and a half naturation. By far the most popular of the series, this double-matured Lagavulin has had a finishing period in sweet, sticky Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. A whisky that never disappoints.

The yearly Distiller's Edition from this excellent Islay classic malt is one of the years most hotly anticipated releases. Not because it's necessarily collectible or rare, but just simply that so many people find it so consistantly delicious. It starts with well aged smokey malt from the famous south shore distillery. The oily and richly peated whisky is filled into fresh Pedro Ximinez sherry casks for an additional aging of about a year. Drawn from the cask and bottled at 86 proof, it couples the wild intensity of Islay peat with the robust sweetness of the famous Spanish wine. There are few malt drinkers, even those not specifically predisposed to smokey scotch, that can deny the obvious deliciousness of this special release.

Lagavulin

The whisky produced at Lagavulin has a range of personalities. The stills are run very full, which reduces the amount of copper contact the spirit has, and the distillation is slow. Both of these are factors in creating the distillery’s versatile and weighty spirit. Maturation is mostly in bourbon casks, with a few ex-sherry casks used to create the signature character of Lagavulin’s older whiskies.

In its youth, the distillery’s whisky is feisty and raw, with huge seaside smokiness; but as it ages, it quickly gains weight and elegance, with the official 16-year-old release well known as one of Islay’s most consistently excellent drams.
