Evan Williams 1783 Small Batch honors the year that Evan Williams founded Kentucky's First Distillery. This small batch Bourbon is pulled from less than 200 barrels. It's extra-aged and uses the same sour mash process and traditional recipe made popular by our namesake. Nose of oaky vanilla, sautéed butter & buttered sweet corn. Semi-sweet, oaky & honeyed taste. Lean, off-dry & regal finish.
The early fragrance emits subtle, almost floral/fruity scents of banana, matted rose petals, field grasses and marzipan; aeration releases deeper aromas, especially oaky vanillin, sautéed butter, deep-fried pork rind and buttered sweet corn. Palate entry is semisweet, oaky and honeyed; at midpalate, toffee and light caramel tastes merge with the gentle bite of spirit. Finishes lean, off-dry and regal. The best whiskey value in the world, bar none.
The Bourbon
This bourbon has a mid-amber, pretty standard coloring, and sits right on the benchmark for bourbon qualities. The nose leads with a hefty dollop of brown sugar and vanilla, with light notes of marshmallow and leather. Sipping yields a flavor following right behind that profile, with the modest leathery note transitioning into oaky. The finish is sweet, light, brief and undistinguished.
It’s that last part, the finish, that really holds this expression back. It’s good bourbon, nothing remarkable in and of itself, but good nonetheless. The only bad thing I think should be said about it is that it really just doesn’t sit for a spell after you sip on it.
