Historical background at the time of founding
As a full-bodied and deep-tasting sake, "White Mayumi" is popular with locals and sake lovers all over the country. It has won awards at numerous competitions and is now known as a sake that represents Hida Furukawa.
The fact that we, the Kama Sake Brewery, the brewery of this white mayumi, have been working hard to make good sake for a long time is nothing more than the foundation that the first generation, Toyasu, has worked hard to build, and the tireless efforts of the owners of the brewery for generations.
Founded in 1704
About 300 years ago, in the first year of Hoei (1704), Toyasu started trading in this Hida Furukawa. At that time, the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, ruled the world, and he was trying to create an ideal world by creating new social norms, such as the civil rule government that valued virtue and the decree of mercy for living beings that valued living things. Toan has also been steadily expanding his business without going against the trend of the world.
Great famine in Hida
Then, in the 4th year of Hoei (1707), the Hoei earthquake occurred. A large eruption also occurred on the side of Mt. Fuji, causing extensive damage from the coast of the Tokaido to the coast of Nankai. In addition, a great famine broke out in Hida as a result of this major earthquake. Toyasu went to Yue Chugoku (present-day Toyama Prefecture), where he was trading, to collect food for the people of Hida Furukawa, and ran around to buy rice.
However, he was stranded at the border and was banned from taking out rice. At that time, he begged the officials, "I can keep myself, but I want you to take the rice to Hida Province somehow."
It is said that when the magistrate heard this story, he was moved by Teng'an's aspirations and said, "Only the first generation of Teng'an will be allowed freedom of trade with Vietnam." Thanks to this, Deng'an's business flourished and he was able to make a fortune.
Based on these goods and foundations left by Toyasu, sake brewing began after that, and Haku Mayumi was born.
Origin of the name of the white bow
The origin of the name Shira Mayumi is derived from the pillow word for "fold" in the Manyoshu "Shira Mayumi Hita no Hosoe no Suga no Suga no Tori ni Koi no Nekane Tsuru" (Volume 12), and it is said that it was named White Mayumi because of the fact that a cypress tree grows wild in Hida.
Since the sake that became the face of the Kama sake brewery, Shira Mayumi, was made, we have been brewing sake continuously for generations. In addition to continuing to uphold these traditions of sake brewing, we have inherited the spirit of Toan, who tried to send rice even at the cost of himself, and continue to make efforts for the community with the family motto, "Do not devour profit, but take it."
Contributing to society and the community is an important mission of our brewery, as well as sake brewing. With that firmly in mind, we would like to become a sake brewery that is loved by everyone and continue to make famous sake, Shira Mayumi.
